The Angels acquired another All Star today to bolster their rotation. It was announced that Zack Greinke has been traded from the Milwaukee Brewers to the Los Angeles Angels for three minor league players. The deal includes the Angels number one prospect shortstop Jean Segura.
Greinke is currently 9-3 with a 3.44 ERA. He was traded to the Brewers in 2011 after posting a 16-8 record in 2009. He also won the AL Cy Young award that year.
The Angels were looking to add to their rotation with injuries to Ervin Santana and Dan Haren. With a rotation that includes CJ Wilson, Jered Weaver, Haren, and now Greinke, the Angels look to have a solid rotation as they make a playoff push.
The Brewers will get Segura and two Double A pitchers. Before being called up, Segura was batting .294 with 33 stolen bases in 94 games for Double A Arkansas.
This is more bad news for the Mariners. With this addition, the AL West is quickly becoming one of the most difficult divisions in baseball. We all know what the Rangers can do and what the Angels picked up this off season. The A’s are also coming alive in recent weeks. We are falling behind the curve quickly.
With Greinke off the market, I think it really opens up some trade opportunities for Vargas. With his great outting last night, it should be interesting to see if he moves out and what for.
I actually think this is great for the Mariners. We wont be competitive for at least a year or two anyways, and this gets Segura out of their farm system. Segura is the #6 ranked SS prospect in baseball and only 22, so under team control for quite a few more years. Greinke, if Im not mistaken, will be a free agent at the end of the season. It was a steep price to pay for a 3 month rental… of course that argument goes out the window if they can resign Greinke.
It’s a good point, but the Angels have already said they are confident they can get him signed to a long term deal.
